Patient Guide
Knowing the name of a procedure is not enough. See the complete pathway—from medicines, fasting and a companion to pathology and follow-up.
Request an AppointmentBefore requesting an appointment
Bring endoscopy, pathology, blood test and imaging reports together. List every medicine and dose, especially blood thinners, diabetes medicines and supplements. Tell the team about allergies, possible pregnancy and any previous anaesthesia problems.
Fasting and bowel preparation
Preparation differs by procedure. Upper endoscopy, EUS and ERCP usually require fasting; lower gastrointestinal procedures need detailed bowel cleansing. Follow the individual written protocol from your treating unit rather than generic internet timings.
Sedation and a responsible adult
Sedation can temporarily affect reflexes and judgement. You may need to avoid driving and signing important documents, and arrange a responsible adult to take you home. Tell the unit in advance if you must attend alone.
What to bring
Bring identification, reports, imaging files, a medicine and allergy list, comfortable clothing and any personal medical devices. Leave valuables at home. Arrival time is not procedure time; safety checks and anaesthesia preparation take time.
Discharge checklist
Get written instructions on eating, drinking, medicines, expected symptoms, urgent warning signs, pathology, and follow-up. If a stent is inserted, make sure its removal or exchange date is recorded.
